Overlooking the Duomo square, with an extraordinary view of the cathedral, the Museum of the 20th Century offers a rich collection of masterpieces from international avant-garde movements to Arte Povera, with great attention to Futurism. It is located inside the Arengario, the modernist palace designed in the 1930s by Giovanni Muzio and Piero Portaluppi for Mussolini's addresses to the people.
The 400 square metres of exhibition space, redesigned in 2010 by Italo Rota, are spread over three floors around a large spiral staircase reminiscent of the Guggenheim. The route begins with the museum's most famous painting, Pellizza da Volpedo's *Quarto Stato* (The Fourth Estate), a symbol of humanitarian socialism.
The first section is dedicated to early 20th-century international avant-garde movements, including Expressionism, Cubism and Abstraction, with works by Picasso, Kandinsky and three famous portraits by Amedeo Modigliani. This is followed by a rich collection of masterpieces by Boccioni and Futurism, demonstrating the close relationship between Milan and the movement founded by Tommaso Marinetti.
One of the most beautiful rooms is dedicated to Morandi, with his landscapes and still lifes, followed by Giorgio De Chirico's pre-Metaphysical works.
Great attention is given to the \u2018900 group with Mario Sironi, Funi and Carr\u00e0, while the 1950s are represented in particular by Alberto Burri and his works made of non-pictorial materials such as tar and PVA glue.
In this landscape, the sacrilegious irony of Milanese Piero Manzoni, with his provocative works, including the famous artist's shit, could not be missing.
To conclude, the most exciting room dedicated to Lucio Fontana, on the top floor of the museum with large windows overlooking the Duomo: the ceiling is dominated by a large neon light visible also from the piazza \u2013 in a fortunate osmosis between interior and exterior \u2013 while on the walls his famous cuts on canvas are displayed.
