Getting around Milan by public transport

Milan isn't such a large city, so the advice is to explore it as much as possible on foot, using your preferred mode of transport for longer stretches, which is the tram. The historic lines, such as the number one or number two, still use the old "carrello" trams – the single-carriage orange trams with wooden interiors. Years ago, the city of San Francisco bought these in bulk from the Lombard capital, and they've now become a symbol of the Californian metropolis (evidently, they're better at marketing than us!). The other lines, like the number three, which goes from the Navigli district to Piazza Duomo, have adopted new, modern trains. While they may lack the charm of the old "carrello" trams, they do have the advantage of step-free access, which is convenient for prams and heavy suitcases.
The metro network, with its 6 urban lines, is the most developed in Italy and allows you to reach every point of the city, also thanks to the new lilac line. For route information: www.atm.it
If you prefer cycling, the public bicycle is an excellent alternative, and economical, way to get around Milan. Bikemi has hundreds of stations dotted all over the city, from the centre to the ring road, so renting one is very easy: www.bikemi.it
Milan is also at the forefront of car-sharing. Those who prefer to get around freely on four wheels can choose from a wide range of smart or electric rental cars: www.enjoy.com www.car2go.com www.drive-now.com
